MY WEEK 13 : ( MARCH 27TH )

Well Spring is here at long last, perfect growing weather for both weeds and crops with all the sunshine and showers we have had, but it's nice to be able to get on with planting and sowing.

This week I have planted my first early potatoes ( Foremost ) 3 rows of them 12" apart, 7" deep with 18" between the rows. A few of the garlic bulbs that I planted have not sprouted so with some spare bulbs from a fellow plotholder I filled in the gaps, they will still be large enough for cooking purposes but not for keeping as seed stock for next year.
In my greenhouse at home I have sown my Butternut Squash, Fennel Bulbs and some Kohl Rabi which is something I have not grown before so I am looking forward to seeing how they do in our climate.

Also this week at the allotments I have prepared the bed for my Gladioli and also trenched the Runner Bean bed, I dug out a trench on either side of the bed 1 1/2 spits deep and then added a 3" layer of manure, newspaper, 3" layer of compost topped with some lime and then replaced the topsoil, hopefuly I will have a bumper crop of one of my favourite vegetables.

Now that the fruit trees have had time to settle and are showing their first shoots, I weeded around them and gave them a dressing of bonemeal to help encourage them develop a good root system.

The greenhouses at home are starting to fill up with a multitude of seedlings and the sun has been that warm this last week I have had to vent them every day to stop the temperature from rising too high.

The Chrysanthemum cuttings are at the stage to be potted on singly and also stopped, this will encourage them to produce several sprays per plant, slightly smaller flowers than if you left them to just continue growing with just the main stem.

Well that's it for this week, I've heard that some areas will see a return of frosts next week so we will need to be careful and cover up anything that is not hardy, have a good week all and I will speak to you all again next week, thanks Steve.
