MY WEEK 12 : ( MARCH 20TH )

Well what a difference a week makes, at the beginning of the week I had to have a fire to keep warm inbetween jobs and then the last couple of days have been glorious and warm.

My sweet peas are making good progress, they are starting to grow away already and with the mild weather we are now experiencing they should do really well.

The rhubarb has started to shoot now, I gave it a mulch with homemade compost about a month ago to give it a good feed and to help retain moisture, shouldn't be too long before I am able to start harvesting.

This week I have been busy preparing the fruit beds in my fruit cage, this one has some young blackcurrant bushes and also some gooseberry cordons which I trained from cuttings taken last year, the idea being that I will have columns of gooseberries that will hopefuly be more productive, easier to harvest and easier to prune.

Also this week I have sown my peas (Kelvedon Wonder ) and mange tout, as the forecast was for the weather to get milder the soil temperature in my raised beds will rise very quickly so germination should be ok now for them.
I have also sown some radish in my salad bed and at home I have sown my self blanching celery and some asters.
Next week it will be time for planting my first early potatoes ( Foremost ), they have been very slow to produce good shoots whilst they have been chitting this year, I guess it shows how much colder it has been this year so far.
Anyway that's it for another week, I hope you are all experiencing the milder weather and manage to get up to your allotments inbetween the showers, speak to you all next week, thanks Steve.
